I set a pot on the stove and boil the ornaments in water. Then, if needed, I scrubb. Boiling kills anything living on it. Just make sure you cool the item before placing it back in the tank.
If the ornaments are made of stone or rock, then boiling is the best way to clean them. If the ornaments are plastic, then you shouldn’t boil them. They’ll deform and start to melt/burn.
To clean my plastic ornaments, I remove them from the tank for a week or so and let them dry. This kills all of the living aquatic things that were on the plastic surface. Then I clean it with, of all things, toothpaste and an old toothbrush. Then I rinse really, really, really well so that none of the residue is left on the ornament. Then I put it back in the tank.
To clean wood ornaments, I suppose you could boil them, but I cover all my driftwood with moss, so they never need cleaning.
To clean gravel, I use a gravel siphon. The gravel is three inches deep in spots, so when I clean I move everything up and down. The top layer of the gravel that was beginning to grow algae goes to the sunless bottom, and stays there until the next cleaning. The overall net growth of algae is minimized.
Boiling is the best way to clean glass.
To clean silk fake plants, soak them in vinegar. Then thoroughly rinse them in water. This will remove any algae.
