just buy a clear coat spray from krylon – it wont drip so it will not have runs in it ( unless u intentionally overspray ) when i think silicone i think to thick – but im not an expert – but the krylon will work -
I used to make these for a living. I would use a durable spray clearcoat made to survive outdoor conditions (Krylon makes a great product), which is easily found in the paint section at nearly any store. Apply several coats, allowing each to dry before applying the next. After a few years the sun and weather will slowly wear away the coating and it will need to be reapplied to keep them rust free.

all of the above. Just make sure before you coat, especially metal., that it is squeeky clean. A good rub down with denatured alcohol will work.
