shuutastic asked:

We recently bought a tank from someone in town some months ago, and they said that they had been keeping turtles in it. We’re not sure if they were saltwater of freshwater; but we’ve used the tank for some saltwater fish and they seem to be doing fine (it’s been about a month and a half now).

There was some green stuff on the ornament which we disregarded as algae, so we cleaned/scrubbed it off with just hot water and a hard sponge; but before I put it in, I just wanted to make sure that it was safe to do so.

The ornaments kind of smell like beach/pool water, so that’s what makes me a bit wary. However, I have read that saltwater cannot be turned back into freshwater, but my fish seem to be doing fine.

Some advice would be appreciated.

I’ve used a previously salt ornament in a freshwater tank without issue. I scrubbed the ornamants under hot water, then left them to set in a bucket of freshwater for a day or so first.

Generally, a little aquarium salt isn’t harmful to freshwater fish. As long as it’s a small concentration, they do just fine.

    Hi,

whatever salt residue is on them won’t harm a thing. In fact you should be putting about 1 tablespoon of kosher salt in your freshwater tank anyway.

Do not use Iodized table salt. Just the UNiodized style. The salt keeps there slime layer at a healthy level and helps their gill function.

If you are unsure of any ornament or rock just soak it in water with 1 cup of chlorine bleach to 5 gallons of water. Let it soak at least overnight for non-porous things and for a month or so for driftwood etc. Remove it from he bleach water, rinse very well and let dry throughly. It is more work, but you will have great tank.

Sounds like you washed it in city water, which contains chlorine, which is in pool water, which you probably smell, so boil the ornaments in a pan of some sort, because chlorine could kill your fish.

It is perfectly fine as long as you rinse it well with tap water… NO CHEMICALS!!! What you mentioned was most likely just algae. As long as the fish are ok. It should be fine.
